Seated Infant with Outstretched Arms, 1500-500 B.C. Olmec Culture, Veracruz, Mexico. Earthenware with traces of red pigment: 12" x 10". Gift of Alphonse Jax

OLMEC SEATED INFANT

ollow baby figures made of white clay are among the best-known Olmec sculptures. Their elongated heads reflect the Olmec practice of shaping the soft skulls of infants as a mark of beauty or distinction. The almond-shaped eyes and downturned mouth of this figure are typical in Olmec art. Traces of red pigment that once accentuated a snug-fitting hat on this figure can still be seen.
